Admin HistoryThe John Lane Archive consisted of approximately 30,000 letters, accounts, readers' reports, and manuscripts covering the activities of John Lane, The Bodley Head Publishing House, dating from 1887-1934. The collection was deposited with Westfield College, in its Rare Book Collection, in 1972 by the Allen Lane Foundation. Mr Michael Rhodes, of the English Department, was appointed the Archive's Archivist. Prior to its deposit at Westfield College, the Archive had been at University College London. In 1984, the Trustees decided to sell the collection. It was sold at Sotheby's on 18 Dec 1985 to Bertram Rota, a London dealer, for £187,000. One series of letters was sold separately for £35,000. The larger part of the collection was sold to the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas. The smaller series were sold to a private American buyer.
