Admin History | The University Grants Committee was established in Jul 1919 by the Treasury, to provide advice to the Government on the financial needs of universities. These terms of reference were later expanded to include making available information relating to university education in the United Kingdom, and to assist and consult with universities for plans of development. It was not a statutory body and its members were not representative on any particular institution or interest. Under the UGC recurrent and non-recurrent grants were granted with the total sum of funds available fixed by the Government.
The Education Reform Act, 1988 established the Universities Funding Council (UFC) which succeeded the UGC. The UFC was then dissolved by the Further and Higher Education Act, 1992 which established the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Since 1 Apr 1993, HEFCE has funded all higher education institutions in the UK. |
