Description | Boxes 1: Photographs and related memorabilia, including signed photographs and cards, of attendees at various international conferences largely concerning mental health issues, in Geneva, Washington and Brazil, between c1960 and 1977. Includes photographs of a symposium of the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry and the World Psychiatric Association in 1973. Also includes a photograph of family group (possibly featuring Eileen Brooke's mother), c1880. Brooke publications regarding mental health information systems 1961-1980, report of a meeting regarding suicide as a mental health issue, Dec 1978. Box 4: Photographs; Folder 1: Seven black and white family photos. Presumably of E M Brooke's maternal family. C. 1890-1900. One black and white photograph from c. 1920-30s which shows one of the women in the earlier family photos, presumably E M Brooke's mother. Also small wedding card from 1903 addressed to Minnie Adams [mother?] Folder 2: Collection of photos from E M Brooke's time at school. Includes original envelope from printers. C. 1915-1920 Folder 3: Collection of photos from E M Brooke's time in upper school /sixth form. Includes group photographs and some photographs of sports teams. C. 1922 Folder 4: Collection of assorted photographs of E M Brooke with family and friends on holiday and at home. Includes some images of unidentified male students and some earlier family photographs. C. 1920-30 Folder 5: Collection of assorted photographs of E M Brooke with family and friends on various trips; including a visit to Germany in 1931, Aswan in 1922 and Winnipeg in 1928. Folder 6: Collection of photographs from international visits including Agra, which has original envelope from printers in Agra, India. Also several photos from an unidentified visit to Asia and three unidentified photographs from c. 1960s [informal]. Small cardboard box which was original housing for the photographs. |
Admin History | Graduated from East London College in 1926 with a BSc in Maths, and in 1929 with a MSc in Mathematics. In 1952 completed a PHD. Carried out statistical analysis work for as Chief of Medical Statistics, Institut Universitaire de Medecine Sociale et Preventive, Lausanne, Switzerland (Corresponding Associate) and earlier in her career at the World Health Organisation.
Pioneer and supporter of public health orientation in mental health programmes. Co-author with G. C. Tooth of Trends in the mental hospital population and their effect on future planning, published in the Lancet in 1961, in which it was claimed that, as the result of statistical analyses of current trends, the future needs of beds in British mental hospitals would be halved. A paper which proved influential in shaping Government policy with regard to the future of mental hospitals.
