Charles Frederick Gurney Masterman, born in 1873, was a British Liberal Party politician and journalist; in 1906, he was elected as Member of Parliament for West Ham North; he worked closely with Winston Churchill and Lloyd George on the People's Budget of 1909 and was responsible for the passage through parliament of the National Insurance Act 1911; he was sworn as a Privy Councillor in 1912, and in 1914 he was appointed to the Cabinet as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster but resigned from Government when he lost his own seat which he was legally required to recontest in a by-election; when the First World War began, he served as head of the British War Propaganda Bureau; died, 1927. |
