Admin HistoryJohn Morley, 1st Viscount Morley of Blackburn, born 1838, was a British Liberal statesman, writer and newspaper editor. He was editor of the Fortnightly Review from 1867-1882 and the Pall Mall Gazette 1880-1883. Elected a Member of Parliament in 1883; Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1886 and 1892-1895; Secretary of State for India 1905-1910 and again in 1911; Lord President of the Council 1910-1914. He wrote a biography of William Gladstone. He opposed imperialism and the Boer War; his opposition to British entry into the First World War as an ally of Russia led him to leave government in August 1914. He married Rose Ayling in 1870; died, 1923.
