Description | Copper-plate engraving on laid paper of a statue of Farnese Hercules, originally engraved by Glotzius c.1592.
The two bystanders included at the bottom of the image may have been included to add a sense of scale to the statue. The base of the statue is inscribed 'Hercules Victor'.
Only two states of this print are known. This print has been unevenly trimmed cutting off the platemarks and the following verses, 'Domito triformi rege Lusitaniae, / Raptis que malis qaue Hesperi sub cardine, Servarat bortis aureis vigil draco, / Fesus quievi terror orbis Hercules.' / This verse flanked the following label, 'Statua, antiqua Romae in palatio Cardinalis Fernesii opus post humum. HColtzy, iam primum divulgat. Ano. M.D.C.X.VIII.' [1618]. |
